Mt. Woodson Golf Club, situated in the Ramona Valley half an hour northeast of San Diego, is a public golf course that has consistently been voted as one of the best golf courses in San Diego County. Designed by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley in 1991, this quirky and challenging target-style course features narrow corridors, elevated poa annua greens, and several forced carries. The course plays longer than its scorecard distance with the blue tee markers coming in at just 5,764 yards, making accuracy and placement key elements of the game. Each of the 18 holes has a distinct name, and one of the most unforgettable moments is crossing the 450-foot-long wooden bridge between the 2nd green and 3rd tee. The course is laid out amidst towering oaks, granite boulders, sparkling lakes, and looming canyons. The 6th hole is an idyllic par 3 with boulders protruding from a pond, while the 16th hole, "Make a Bet," concludes on a plateau green that overlooks the Ramona Valley. The 17th hole, "The Forest," is a downhill drivable par 4 that starts from one of the highest spots in San Diego County and culminates at a green surrounded by ancient tall oaks. The clubhouse features a pro shop and the Stony Mountain Bar & Grill, which serves golf course fare and overlooks a portion of the layout. The practice facilities include a full-swing hitting net, as well as a short game and putting area across the parking lot. Overall, Mt. Woodson Golf Club is a strategic, fun, and scenic golf course that will make any golfer want to come back for more.
